Engineering Properties and Hydraulic Behavior of Cohesive Sediments
Added 12/17/2007Written by a well-known hydraulic and coastal engineer with more than 40 years of research and practical experience particularly in the areas of sedimentation, stratified flows, and estuarine hydraulics, Engineering Properties and Hydraulic Behavior of Cohesive Sediments presents important fundamental aspects of the hydraulic behavior of these sediments while linking these aspects to a rational approach to the solution of related engineering problems. The author concisely and rigorously presents the fundamentals of clay mineralogy and clay colloid chemistry. He emphasizes the inter-particle physicochemical forces and properties of aggregates, in particular their density, strength, and settling velocities, which control the hydraulic behavior of cohesive sediments in a form to be easily followed by readers with little or no background in these areas. He then discusses the criteria for selecting appropriate tests and field measurements, and explains the guidelines for estimating the initiation, degree, and rate of erosion, deposition, and resuspension of cohesive sediments and their application to real life problems.
After presenting the mineralogical and physico-chemical properties of cohesive sediments, the author develops the governing sediment transport equations followed by the hydraulic processes of flocculation by the Brownian motion, flow-induced stresses, and differential settling. He provides a short discussion of the rheological properties of cohesive sediments suspensions and presents the fundamental aspects of erosion for dense and loose fine cohesive sediments followed by a similar presentation for deposition and resuspension. The book closes with discussions of the applications of the presented fundamental knowledge to the design of canals safe against scouring and siltation and to the control of shoaling in estuarial waterways.

Structural Analysis: The Analytical Method
Added 12/19/2007
Ramon Jarquio, P.E. A new analytical method that uses the capacity axis of a section to determine its minimum capacity for biaxial bending as well as provide the reference for equilibrium of external and internal forces has been developed. Introducing this method, Structural Analysis: The Analytical Method illustrates the procedures for predicting the capacities of circular and rectangular sections in concrete and steel materials. The author demonstrates the ineffectiveness of the standard interaction formula for biaxial bending using the results of the analytical method.
The book covers how to predict analytically the capacities of these sections without using the current standard interaction formula for biaxial bending. It begins with a discussion of the capacities of rectangular and circular footing foundation for a given allowable soil-bearing pressure followed by the author's latest integration of the Boussinesq's elastic equation for the dispersion of surface loads in determining the exact average pressure to use in the standard soil settlement formula. The author provides all the equations and tabulated values of key point's capacities of commercially-produced steel pipe, rectangular tubing, and steel I-sections for ready reference of civil and structural engineers. He then lists the derived equations for the determination of the ultimate strength capacity curve of reinforced concrete columns and concrete-filled tubular columns without using the rectangular stress block method of analysis. Most current books use the standard interaction formula for biaxial bending instead of the analytical method described in this book. Elucidating an elegant, straightforward and precise method and thus limiting guesswork, this book makes it easier to confirm the adequacy and safety of designs by direct comparison of the external loads to the internal capacities of circular and rectangular sections in structural analysis and design.

Optimal Traffic Control: Urban Intersections
Added 4/8/2008
Slobodan Guberinic, Gordana Senborn, Bratislav Lazic Despite traffic circles, four-way stop signs, lights regulated by timers or sensors, and other methods, the management of urban intersections remains problematic. Consider that transportation systems have all the features of so-called complex systems: the great number of state and control variables, the presence of uncertainty and indeterminism, the complex interactions between subsystems, the necessity to optimize several optimization criteria, and active behavior of the controlled process, to name just a few. Therefore, a mathematical approach to these systems can resolve their complex issues more elegantly than other methods.
Addressing both efficiency and traffic safety issues, Optimal Traffic Control: Urban Intersections examines the traffic control optimization problem and presents a novel solution method. Using an approach based on control theory, graph theory, and combinatorial optimization, the authors derive a full mathematical description of the traffic control problem and enumerate all combinatorial aspects. The result is a set of algorithmic solutions to various problems along with computer implementation that you can incorporate into real traffic control systems for immediate results. The book concludes by evaluating how the choice of a complete set of signal groups influences intersection performance.
Although modern cities throughout the world have a unique character influenced by culture, geography, and population, most of them share one main feature: busy intersections and the issue of controlling the traffic traveling through them. The development of information technologies, especially computer and telecommunications techniques, has changed the complexity of the problem and influenced the development of new solutions. Clearly stating the issues and presenting a possible solution, this book shows you how to take full advantage of all the capabilities of microprocessor-based traffic signal controllers.

Modern Protective Structures
Added 4/9/2008
Theodor Krauthammer In today's world, reasonably predictable military operations have been replaced by low intensity conflicts-less predictable terrorist activities carried out by determined individuals or small groups that possess a wide range of backgrounds and capabilities. Because of the threats posed by this evolving type of warfare, civil engineers and emergency personnel face new challenges in designing facilities to protect lives and property and in conducting effective rescue operations and forensic investigations. Addressing these needs, Modern Protective Structures develops realistic guidelines for the analysis, design, assessment, retrofit, and research of protected facilities.
After introducing a comprehensive risk management approach, the author provides a general background on explosive devices and their capabilities as well as explosive effects and the processes that generate them. He then discusses the effects of conventional and nuclear explosions. The book subsequently considers the significant design differences between conventional and nuclear loads and between existing design procedures and state-of-the-art information from recent research. It also summarizes existing blast-resistant design approaches and describes the dynamic responses of structural systems to blasts, shocks, and impacts. Additional coverage includes the behavior of specific structural connections, the traditional concept of P-I diagrams, and progressive collapse. The book concludes with a systematic and balanced protective design approach.
Tackling the analytical, design, assessment, and hazard mitigation issues associated with short-duration dynamic loads, this book examines how impulsive loads affect various types of buildings and facilities. It provides the necessary material to help ensure the safety of persons, assets, and projects.
